The population estimate as of 31 March 2021 was 25,799 431 people. This is an increase of 391,000 over 2017. 79% of Australia’s population growth was due to growth in its important capital cities. (Government Statistics)

Australia was the 54th largest country in terms of population in 2019. However, it’s the 6th largest by landmass. The population density in Australia is 3/km2. It is one of the most affordable countries in the world.

In 1770, James Cook claimed the east coast of Australia, followed by the west coast, creating settlements and formally established Australia as a British colony.

Based on statistics given by the Australian National Bureau of Statistics for the 2016 census, this area includes places where population growth has grown and areas where the population has decreased. As you can see on the map, there has been an increase in growth in north Queensland, particularly in the area surrounding the city of Cairns

As might be imagined, Australia is the largest birth location at 66.7 percent , but this is falling from 69.8 percent in 2011 when the last census was conducted.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Population
