About 279 million people speak Portuguese, making it the most widely spoken language globally. With a population of over 207 million people, Brazil is the most populated nation in which Portuguese is the native tongue.




It is the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas and the biggest. 99.5 percent of Brazilians speak Portuguese as their first language.

Portuguese is spoken in several countries and territories outside of Brazil. As a native tongue, Portuguese is widely spoken in both Portugal and Sao Tome and Principe.

The majority of the inhabitants of Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Mozambique speak it as their first language.

The majority of people in Angola also speak it as a second language. The bulk of the population of Cape Verde speaks the language as a second language. In East Timor and Macau, a tiny percentage of the population speaks Portuguese as their first language.

There are Portuguese-speaking nations all around the globe. Venezuela, Guyana, and the United States are all included here. Over 250,000 Americans are proficient in Portuguese. It isn’t only these countries where Portuguese is spoken as a first language.
