Geographically, the Western Hemisphere refers to the western half of the Earth. Earth’s Western Hemisphere is commonly described as the land and ocean areas west of a prime meridian (0° longitude) to the 180th meridian.
The Western Hemisphere includes all of North and South America, their islands and surrounding waterways, Africa, Europe, Antarctica, and a portion of Russia. The Western Hemisphere has less territory than the Eastern Hemisphere, accounting for just 29 percent of the planet’s total land area.
North American countries
North America is situated in the Western Hemisphere and is completely in the North Hemisphere. There are 23 nations in North America, with a total geographical area of 9.54 million square miles and a population of over 580 million people.
There are 23 North American nations in the Western Hemisphere: Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados; Belize; Canada; Costa Rica; Cuba; Dominica; El Salvador; Haiti; Honduras; Jamaica; Mexico; Nicaragua; Panama; Saint Kitts and Nevis; Saint Lucia; Saint Vincent; and Trinidad and Tobago.
These are several territories and island groups not part of a single country in North America.
South American Countries
Most of South America is in the Southern Hemisphere. However, there is a minor section in the Northern Hemisphere. South America has an area of 6.888 million square miles and a population of about 422.5 million. South America consists of 12 nations.
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguy, and Venezuela are the 12 South American nations in the Western Hemisphere: Northern Hemisphere residents may find themselves in Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, parts of Colombia and even parts of Ecuador.
Also included are two non-sovereign territories: the Falkland Islands and French Guinea.
African countries
The Western Hemisphere is home to several African nations. The Western Hemisphere includes the Azores, Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Madeira, Mauritania, Morocco, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Western Sahara.
In the Western Hemisphere, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Algeria, and Togo, to name just a few the nations.
