Interconnected computer networks employing established communication protocols, known as the Internet, provide information and communication services to devices throughout the globe.
The history of the Internet may be traced back to the 1960s when the U.s Government began funding research into developing communication through computer networks.
Email and file-sharing have been present since the 1960s and 1970s, respectively. In the 1980s, ARPANET functioned as the principal predecessor network connecting regional academic or military networks.
In the wake of ARPANET, the National Science Foundation Network (NSFN) sparked widespread adoption of networking technologies and the consolidation of several networks.
Interconnected networks throughout the globe were made possible with the standardization of TCP/IP in 1982. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee, an English physicist, invented the World Wide Web.
Connectivity to the Internet and commercialization of the Internet ushered in the era of the ubiquitous use of Internet services and technology in almost every facet of contemporary life throughout this decade.
Without the Internet, it’s practically hard to stay in touch with others or do basic tasks. On any given day in the last five years, an average of 640,000 individuals had never been on the Internet before (27,000 every hour).
As long as the Internet has existed, most of today’s websites and apps are still in their infancy. Most social media networks came into existence in the mid-to-late-2000s.
However, others appeared much later in history. A decade ago, Wikipedia was born. As far as the Internet is concerned, we’re still in its infancy.
By 2016, there were over 3.4 billion Internet users, 413 million from 2000. For example, in Bangladesh and Ghana, the number of users has doubled in the previous three years. List of nations with the most Internet users based on population:
- China – 765 million
- India – 391 million
- United States – 245 million
- Brazil – 126 million
- Japan – 116 million
- Russia – 109 million
- Mexico – 75.94 million
- Germany – 73.43 million
- Indonesia – 66.45 million
- United Kingdom – 62.35 million
In recent years, smartphone users have accounted for the biggest rise in Internet users in China and India, the two countries with the most Internet users.
The United States ranks third in the world in the number of Internet users and the proportion of the population who utilize the service (about 80%).
