Hispanic Countries 2022

For the most part, the word “Hispanic” refers to Spanish-speaking people, cultures, and countries. No one can say who is or is not Hispanic since there isn’t any agreed-upon standard.

What is a Hispanic person in the eyes of the United States federal government? More than 20 Spanish-speaking nations (including Spain) are included in the “Americans of Spanish origin or ancestry” section of a 1976 statute enacted by Congress.

A more casual technique is used by the U.S. Census Bureau, which merely asks respondents to self-report if they are of Hispanic origin, whether they are from Mexico or Puerto Rico or Cuba, or another Hispanic or Latino country.

A person may choose to be counted as Hispanic if they want, as 18.5 percent of U.S. people did in the 2020 census (note that country of origin is a factor, but the race is not).

When it comes to a person who doesn’t want to be labeled Hispanic, it is true. Anyone may identify as Hispanic, regardless of their race or ethnicity, and they can come from any nation of origin or heritage.

This means that someone adopted by Mexican immigrants in Southern California who is of Asian heritage may identify as Hispanic. Even though their mother was Hispanic, people who connect more with their father’s German-descended family in Wisconsin may not have to identify as Hispanic if they like.

Modern Hispanics themselves are embracing a more open-minded approach. According to the Pew Research Center’s 2015 National Survey of Latinos, just 17% of Hispanic people believed that race had any bearing on whether or not someone was Hispanic.

Only 29% of respondents said it was primarily a matter of genetics, while 42% said it was primarily a matter of cultural background that was the most significant deciding factor.

Differentiation between Latinos and Hispanics

People use the phrases “Hispanic” and “Hispanics” interchangeably, and the two groups overlap significantly. Some population statisticians use the two phrases interchangeably, while others argue that there are significant distinctions between them. Because of this, it’s common to see a separation between language and location.

The word “Hispanic” refers to individuals from Spain or another Spanish-speaking nation, including Equatorial Guinea in Africa, but not Portugal or Brazil, which are Latin American (which both speak Portuguese).

Latino/a/x, on the other hand, is focused on geography and encompasses people of any ethnicity who can trace their ancestry back to Latin America, regardless of the language they speak. As a result, Latino includes Brazil but excludes Spain and Portugal.

The word “Hispanic” dates back to about 200 and 300 BCE. An adjective used to describe what the Romans named Hispania, the modern-day Spanish territory that includes Andorra, Gibraltar, and parts of France and Portugal, is the Latin term Hispanics.

Notably, a sizable proportion of those who may be labeled Hispanic or Latino chooses neither description. Their nation would much rather know them of origin than by a generic label. The word “Peruvian” is preferred by Peruvians, whereas “Chilean” is preferred by Chileans, and so on.
