Fragile States Index 2022

Fund for Peace and Foreign Policy publishes the Fragile States Index, which ranks countries based on their level of instability. Since 2005, this report has been produced once a year.

The major goal of this analysis is to determine the degree to which the sovereign states of the United States are vulnerable.

All UN member nations excluding Taiwan, Kosovo, Western Sahara, Northern Cyprus, and also the Palestinian Territories are included in the report if sufficient data is available.

If a state is at risk of war or collapse, the study considers indications from four areas. Cohesion, Economic, Political, and Social are the four factors that are evaluated.

There are 12 indications used to estimate the state’s level of vulnerability. – Refugees and internally displaced people are only a few of the things to consider, along with human rights and public services. 

The more susceptible a state is, the higher it ranks on the list. At 113.4 on the 2018 Fragile States Index, South Sudan was ranked the most vulnerable country in the world.

In third place was Somalia with a rating of 113.2. Yemen came in third place, with an index score of 112.7.

According to the 2018 Index, the 10 states with the highest likelihood of being struck were:

• South Sudan
• Somalia
• Yemen
• Syria
• Central African Republic
• Democratic Republic of Congo
• Sudan
• Chad
• Afghanistan
• Zimbabwe

In contrast, states with lower ratings were determined to be the most fragile and in danger of civil unrest or perhaps a complete collapse.

Finland was the best-ranked state in the 2018 Index, with a score of 17.9 out of 20. A score of 18.3 put Norway in second place, while a score of 19.2 put Switzerland in third.

This year’s Index shows that these countries are the least likely to be involved in a war or collapse:
