More than 50 nations may one day call Europe home. According to official data, six more European regions were vying for independence from their parent nations by the year 2021, according to official data. Kosovo, which proclaimed its independence from Serbia in 2008, is the most notable.
However, only three of the five permanent United Nations Security Council (and half of all UN member nations) have recognized Kosovo as an independent state.
As a result of the Age of Exploration’s legacy, several European nations also have territory on other continents.
