United States
Despite the claims of many environmental groups that nations with carbon taxes can considerably reduce their emissions, the United States does not presently have a federal carbon tax.
Some states have imposed their carbon taxes, which only apply to emissions inside their borders, whereas the federal government does not.
California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, & Massachusetts are all included in this group. There has been a steady increase in the number of states that impose carbon taxes, and it seems that this trend will continue.
Canada
In 2018, Canada became the first country to enact a federal carbon price after years of debate. In 2019, the carbon price went into force.
On the other hand, Provinces in Canada are free to establish their carbon tax laws. Due to a lack of availability of renewable energy in remote northern regions, this is permitted.
Seven Canadian provinces now employ the federal carbon tax. Three have their own carbon tax laws.
The other three are exempt from the carbon tax requirement because they do not have proper provincial carbon pricing measures in place.
Sweden
In 1991, Sweden became one of the first European countries to impose a carbon price. Many other European nations used its carbon tax law as a model when enacting their carbon taxes afterward.
Liquefied petroleum gas, petrol, oil, coal, natural gas, and jet fuel used for domestic flights are included in Sweden’s carbon tax law.
Several sectors in Sweden, however, are exempt from the tax. Commercial horticulture, industrial manufacturing, and mining are all included in this grouping.
As a result, the carbon tax only affects around half of all Swedish corporate activities.
Swedish carbon emissions were originally subject to SEK 250 per 1000 kg levy. The fee was increased to SEK 365 in 1997. After a significant increase, the interest rate was hiked to SEK 930 in 2007.
Ireland
In 2004, the Irish government considered imposing a federal carbon tax but ultimately decided against it. In 2010, Ireland became the first country to impose a carbon price.
Gasoline, kerosene, and other petroleum-based liquids are all included in this category.

The tax was 15 Euros per tonne at the time of adoption. The price per tonne has now been increased to 20 Euros. The tax is not imposed on farmers.
