America’s Most Generous Presidents

A big part of how people think of politicians is how much they do to help others. In the same way that students have to do volunteer work, politicians have to give to charity.

There are some very wealthy people running for president of the US right now. Michael Bloomberg, for example, gave $3.3 billion to charity in 2019. But for this article, we’ll focus on giving to a charity that doesn’t make money or doing charity work that isn’t meant as a PR move, tax break, etc.

Most of the time, a politician’s work after leaving office is a better way to judge how much they care about helping others. Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama stand out from the rest of the US presidents because they did a lot of good work during and after their terms.

Even though other presidents and politicians have done a lot for charity, these three offer an exciting mix of causes, social and economic conditions, and times.

Jimmy Carter was President.

President from 1977 to 1981: Jimmy Carter (Succeeded By Ronald Reagan)

People often point to former US President Jimmy Carter as a politician who cares about helping others. Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter spent much of their time in an office setting up the foundation for his later charitable work.

Building homes for the poor was at the center of both Carters’ charity work, and Habitat for Humanity was their primary platform for many years. Jimmy Carter started the Carter Center in 1982. He did this in addition to his work with Habitat for Humanity.

It was the same as Jimmy Carter’s goal when he was president: Waging Peace, Fighting Disease, and Building Hope. The Carter Center is busy right now, helping with COVID19 relief in the third world, human rights issues, and raising awareness about mental health in children, among other things.

Bill Clinton, President 1993 – 2001 (George W. Bush took over)

Bill and Hillary Clinton are a couple almost synonymous with politics in the United States. No matter how you feel about politics, the Clintons are a well-known family that gives a lot to charity.

In 1997, Bill and Hillary Clinton started their foundation to raise money for the Clinton Presidential Library. Since it started, the charity’s mission has grown to include many social causes, such as disaster relief, improving children’s health, addressing climate change, and stopping epidemic diseases.

But a Clinton organization wouldn’t be a Clinton organization without scandal, and the Clinton Foundation has been hit with accusations and investigations.

Bill and Hillary Clinton’s foundation, in which Chelsea Clinton, the former first daughter, is often involved, has been looked into a lot, primarily because of questions about how it raises money.

Even though the Clinton Foundation may have done something wrong, the fact is that it has given millions of dollars to good causes over its more than 20-year history.

Barack Obama, President 2009-2017 (Donald Trump took over)

President Obama gives each other fist-bumps. On June 23, 2011, President Obama read a letter from Make-a-Wish child Diego Diaz during his visit to the Oval Office.

Michelle Obama and Barack Obama, who used to be president, are well-known for their charity work. Obama did a lot of important things while he was president.

His salary and the $1.4 million he won for winning the Nobel Peace Prize were split between 10 different charities. In 2014, the Obama Foundation was set up in Chicago, Illinois. Its goal is to promote human rights, equal opportunities, and cultural progress.

Michelle Obama has a significant role in the foundation and does charitable work independently. In the year after Barack Obama left the White House in 2017, the Obama Foundation got severe about fundraising and raised $232.6M.

In the years to come, the foundation will do more things. Obama has said that he thinks the foundation could have an even more significant impact than his presidency.
