Many goods made from crude oil are gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and heating oils. These are all essential to people all over the globe daily. The color of crude oil ranges from yellow to black, and its density and viscosity may vary widely.

A distillation process separates crude oil into its constituent fractions, subsequently used to create different end products. Crude oil is taken from reserves and distilled. Additionally, heavier crude oil fractions are utilized to produce lubricating oils, such as petroleum jelly, for detergents and soaps.

Crude Oil in the United States

The United States crude oil production is at around 12.108 million barrels per day, making it the world’s leading crude oil producer.

Those states that produce the most oil are Alaska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, & Texas. In 2018, the United States overtook Saudi Arabia and Russia as the world’s top crude oil producers.

U.S. oil production dwarfs its consumption, which means that the US is a net oil importer. The average daily consumption of crude oil in the United States is 19.69 million barrels. Oil must be imported from other nations since this amounts to more oil than the United States generates in a day.

U.S. Oil Imports by Country

It is estimated that from July to December of 2021, the United States will import between 8.1 and 8.8 million barrels of crude oil per day. OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) countries provide a little over one million barrels per day, with Saudi Arabia providing the majority (550,000 barrels per day).

Non-OPEC countries provide the United States with about 7.5 million barrels of crude oil per day. The largest supplier to the United States is Canada, with daily shipments of around 4.7 million barrels.
