A report titled “Fractionalization” study in the Journal of Economic Growth by a team of researchers from Harvard University, the World Bank, Stanford University, and New York University is one of the most extensive studies.

This is a measure of how likely it is that two random persons in a particular nation would come from two distinct groups (ethnicities, religions, etc.) or speak two different languages. Fractionalization begins with a number in the range of 0 to 1, with 0 denoting no variation and 1 denoting all possible variations simultaneously.
