Because there are many different definitions of what constitutes an invasion, no one list of countries the United States has invaded can be regarded as fully complete.
Consider that the United States invaded another nation 11 times and stretched over 5 different conflicts by declaring war and going to war.
After a declaration of war, the United States has invaded the following countries:
Country | Year | War | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Great Britain | 1812 | War of 1812 | Maritime engagements, no war on British home soil |
Mexico | 1846 | Mexican-American War | |
Spain | 1898 | Spanish-American War | Cuba and Spain’s Pacific territories, not Spanish mainland |
Germany | 1917 | World War I | |
Austria-Hungary | 1917 | World War I | |
Germany | 1941 | World War II | |
Italy | 1941 | World War II | |
Japan | 1941 | World War II | |
Bulgaria | 1942 | World War II | |
Hungary | 1942 | World War II | |
Romania | 1942 | World War II |
If, on the other hand, any major hostile intrusion into another country’s territory, even if war is not formally declared, is included in the definition of an invasion, the list might contain numerous more entries. Dr. Gideon Polya of La Trobe University prepared the following list in 2013:
U.S. invasions since 1776 include:
Afghanistan | Albania | Algeria | Angola | Argentina |
Austria | Bolivia | Bosnia | Burma | Cambodia |
Chile | China | Colombia | Cuba | Dominican Republic |
Egypt | El Salvador | France | Germany | Greece |
Grenada | Guam | Guatemala | Haiti | Hawaii |
Honduras | Hungary | India | Indonesia | Iran |
Iraq | Italy | Japan | Korea | Kuwait |
Laos | Lebanon | Liberia | Libya | Macedonia |
Mali | Mexico | Micronesia | Morocco | Nicaragua |
Niger | Oman | Pakistan | Panama | Papua New Guinea |
Philippines | Puerto Rico | Russia | Samoa | Saudi Arabia |
Somalia | Sudan | Syria | Tunisia | Turkey |
Uganda | Uruguay | Vanuatu | Vietnam | Virgin Islands |
Yemen | Yugoslavia | Zaire (now Congo) |
United States of America’s complete list of foreign Countries conquered.
There have been several invasions by U.S. troops since the country’s formation, if the term invasion is broadened to cover any interaction with a foreign government or territory, including parts of the Western Hemisphere that were formerly foreign territories but are now U.S. states.
Indeed, the United States has been militarily linked with all but three countries: Andorra, Bhutan, and Liechtenstein, according to historians Christopher Kelly and Stuart Laycock.
The following table gathered from numerous previously published lists, including those provided by the Congressional Research Service (CRS) and the Global Policy Forum, provides a more comprehensive account of U.S. overseas use of force occurrences.
This list isn’t complete, so don’t take it as such. Many covert actions, for example, have no known official record and hence will not show in the official records.
Remember that even if this list is comprehensive and complete, it may mislead. The CRS counts even a small squad entering another nation to pursue a criminal. For example, suppose a country’s neighbor is amassing troops on its border.
In that case, an American deterrent force may be welcomed by some participants and viewed as an invasion by others, according to the CRS. The CRS also explicitly states that the legality of the events listed has not been considered.

Because of this, the source lists, and in turn, the list below, cover a wide range of events that may or may not suit one’s definition of invasion.
For example, U.S. peacekeeping missions in which the country was (arguably) invited to enter another country’s territory, humanitarian missions like disaster relief efforts, or WWII battles in which the country landed on the shores of a Pacific island like Vanuatu to repel Japanese forces already occupying it.
Considering how comprehensive our book is, we’ve provided extra information on each event so that readers may sort out the invasions from the non-invasions based on their preferences and preferences alone.
