The population for 2021 in Edmonton is 1,047,003. This represents 23.7 percent of the number of people living in Alberta. This figure is based on extrapolating the data from the census of 2016. The census for 2021 is expected in 2022.

Edmonton is among the five biggest cities in Canada. It is known by its nickname of”the Gateway to the North, it is the capital of Alberta but it’s not the one that has the largest population in the province. That honor is given to Edmonton located in the southern part of the Calgary-Edmonton Corridor.

Edmonton Population Expansion

Fort Edmonton was founded as an exchange post for the Hudson Bay Company in 1795. Between 1895 and 1830, Fort Edmonton was at four different locations before finally settling down on Fort Edmonton as its permanent home in 1830.

In the year 1878, when it was the time of the municipal census in Edmonton it had a population of only 148 residents.

In 2016 the visible minorities comprised 37.1 percent of the city’s inhabitants. This was a substantial improvement from the 30 percent reported just five years prior in the census of 2011. It was only 40 years ago that when the census was conducted in 1981, only 2.95 percent of residents in Edmonton were classified as visible minorities.

Four visible minorities comprise more than five percent of the total population. They include South Asian (9.5%), Chinese (6.3%), Black (5.9%), and Filipino (5/9 percent).

Additionally, 5.5 percent of people are part of an aboriginal population with the two most significant being Metis (2.8 percent) as well as First Nations (2.5 percent).

Europeans were the biggest group, accounting for 57.4 percent of the population, a decrease from 64.7 percent in the year 2011.
