While most English-speaking nations (as well as China and India) teach that there are seven continents, some countries group North America and South America as a single continent.
From north to south, it extends 14,000 kilometers (8,700 miles) and is often referred to as the Americas or simply America.
It is so large that it almost touches the Arctic and Antarctic Circles. More than 1.014 billion people live in the Americas, and they cover an area of about 16.43 million square miles. More than 35 nations are found in the Americas, several of which are international leaders in their own right.
In the Americas, the United States is home to over 333 million people spread throughout its 50 states. With a population of approximately 214 million, Brazil is the second-largest country globally. Two-thirds of the people in the Americas live in these three nations.
New York City, Mexico City, So Paulo (Brazil), Los Angeles, and Rio de Janeiro are among the eight megacities in the Americas, having a population of 10 million people or more (Brazil). Buenos Aires (Argentina), Bogotá (Colombia), and Lima (Peru) are the surviving megacities.
A country’s total land area and water area may be larger than either its population or its land area alone, yet none of these factors accounts for the vastness of the United States of America.
According to overall land area, Canada is the biggest nation by far (and the second-largest in the world, after Russia). With 38 million, Canada has fewer people than the United States, despite its physical size.
Canada’s population is only slightly higher than Peru’s (33.3 million), the nation home to the Machu Picchu ruins. Saint Kitts and Nevis the smallest sovereign republic in the Americas, with a population of slightly over 53,000.
A surprising number of the Americas’ tiniest nations are geographically American and politically European.
All three of these territories have populations of 5,766 or more: the French-controlled archipelago Saint Pierre and Miquelon, the British-controlled Caribbean island Montserrat and the Falkland Islands off the coast of Argentina.
