Blood Type by Country 2022

Blood isn’t all created equal. The presence or absence of particular antigens, such as proteins, carbohydrates, glycoproteins, or glycolipids, determines blood type, also known as blood group.

Because certain blood kinds are incompatible, knowing one’s blood type is critical during blood transfusions. Because the body attacks an incompatible blood type as a life-threatening illness, transfusions that don’t match a patient’s blood type may be dangerous and even fatal.

The presence or absence of two antigens, A and B, on the surface of red blood cells determines which of the four main blood groups a person belongs to (and the opposite antibodies in its plasma).

Blood may also be classed as positive (+) or negative (-) based on the presence of a protein called the Rh factor. With the use of the ABO and the Rh systems, we can identify the eight major blood types:

• A positive (A+) — Can donate cells to A+ and AB+
• A negative (A-) — Can donate cells to A+/- or AB+/-
• B positive (B+) — Can donate cells to B+ and AB+
• B negative (B-) — Can donate cells to B+/- and AB+/-
• O positive (O+) — Can donate cells to A+, B+, AB+, and O+
• O negative (O-) — Can donate cells to all types (universal donor)
• AB positive (AB+) — Can donate cells to AB+
• AB negative (AB-) — Can donate cells to AB+/-

Any blood type may be transfused with Type O- blood, as seen above. Since O- is the universal blood type donor and O+ is the most frequent blood type, hospitals are continuously short of type O blood.

Blood types B- and AB- are the least frequent. For plasma transfusions, the compatibility of blood groups is inverted. It is now possible to give plasma to any patient, regardless of their blood type.

Patients needing plasma from O- donors must be infected with the O- virus. The most prevalent blood type in the United States is O-.

By race, the American Red Cross reports that type O-‘s frequency is 37% among Caucasians, 47% among African Americans, 39% among Asians, and 53% among Latino-Americans, respectively.
