Arable Land by Country 2022

As defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), land that can be utilized to cultivate seasonal crops is considered arable land.

Agricultural land utilized for pasturing, tree farming (also known as “silviculture”), or longer-lasting crops such as coffee and rubber plantations is not included.

In certain cases, non-arable land may be turned into farmland by removing trees or tilling pastureland. Mountains, tundra, and deserts are examples of territories that cannot make bearable in the future. From the Lain word mirabilis, which means “plowable,” we get the term arable.

With 604,000 square miles, India held the world’s largest arable land at 156.4 million hectares in 2016. The Himalayas covers nearly 53% of India’s total land area.

However, the United States stands second, with just 16.8% of the country’s landmass (approximately 152.2 million hectares) being suitable for agriculture. At 58%, Bangladesh has the most arable land of any country.

Even though Greenland is the world’s biggest country without arable land, the Vatican City State’s tiniest nation is also a city-state without any.

There were 1,407 million hectares (5.4 million square miles) of arable land around the globe in 2013. Since 1961, the amount of arable land globally has dropped by approximately a third due to reforestation, soil erosion, and desertification due to global warming.
