Can you explain the origin of various national names? Most nations get their names from one of four sources: a notable figure in the country’s history, a geographical reference, a geographical feature, or a cultural group.

For instance, the term Khazakh, from the old Turkic qaz, meaning to travel, accurately describes the nomadic lifestyle of the original Kazakhs and serves as the basis for the name Kazahkstan.

The name El Salvador is yet another case in point. El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated nation in Central America, and it’s also the only country in the Americas with 10 letters.

El Salvador, so called by the Spanish conqueror Pedro de Alvarado, literally means The Savior in Spanish.

Castle Lucilinburhuc, whose name was anglicized to Luxembourg as Little Fortress, is whence the city got its name. The castle was originally referenced under this name in 963 CE when Count Siegfried of Ardennes bought it. The original Luciniburhuc name has been anglicized to Luxembourg.
