Nations like the United States and the UK have made progress in extending the rights of LGBTQ+ persons. At the same time, other countries still maintain laws against homosexuality and other forms of sexual orientation that are part of the penal code.

Uganda would have been a notable example if the government had passed a measure that would have resulted in prison time for anybody who neglected to disclose gay activity and much heavier punishments for those charged.

On the other hand, some nations are significantly more welcoming to LGBTQ+ people. Argentina and Uruguay, two South American nations, are significant instances.

As the only African nation to permit homosexual marriage, South Africa made history in 2006 when it became lawful to wed a gay man.
